Spoor Bunch Franz merges with second major accounting firm in two years

Strawn, Marshall, Cunningham, Condon & Sweat join SBF team

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — One of Tampa Bay’s most accomplished and rooted accounting agencies has merged with yet another major accounting firm in just a two-year span. Strawn, Marshall, Cunningham, Condon & Sweat joins Spoor Bunch Franz, to grow the full-service accounting firm to nearly 60 members. The merger took effect January 1, 2018.

Spoor Bunch Franz (SBF) was founded January 1, 2016, with the merger of Clearwater’s Spence Marston Bunch & Morris and St. Petersburg’s Spoor & Associates (each founded in the 1970s).

In November 2017, Spoor Bunch Franz opened a new office (at 877 Executive Center Drive West, Saint Petersburg, Florida 33702). Throughout the year, the firm supported such causes as the Great American Teach-In, National Down Syndrome Society, Police Athletic League, American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, YWCA, Meals on Wheels, and Metropolitan Ministries – all while helping clients navigate an eventful economy, with tax changes on the horizon.

SBF has a long history of civic and industry leadership – founders came from top national firms, authored books and articles, chaired industry task forces, served on legislative panels, provided expert testimony, led continuing education courses, and helped author and revise Florida tax law.

The firm’s three managing partners – W.G. Spoor, Steve Bunch, and Rich Franz – serve as leaders in the community and the industry. “Firm values were long-established by our founders – consistently thinking about people first,” said Bunch. Office neighbors for years, the firms had known each other and worked together. “In this merger and with this growth we’re reinforcing a foundation to best serve our clients and our employees,” said Spoor.

SBF works with a variety of large national clients to mid-size local businesses, around Tampa Bay and across the country. “With our size, technology, and capabilities, we’re a sensible solution for our clients in New York and other large markets,” said Franz. “They receive top-tier financial expertise at Tampa Bay rates.”

About Spoor Bunch Franz: SBF uses practices of the emerging “Next Generation Accounting Firm” movement. A family-oriented business, SBF encourages healthy work-life balance. Team members are deeply involved with many community and industry endeavors, not limited to: Police Athletic League, Synovus Bank Advisory Board, American Stage Theater, John Gorrie Foundation, First United Methodist Church, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA).
